The nasopharyngeal microbiota of preweaned dairy calves with and without ultrasonographic lung lesions

چکیده

The primary objective of this cross-sectional study was to identify associations between the diversity and composition nasopharyngeal (NP) microbiota pneumonia status, as diagnosed by ultrasonography (US), in preweaned dairy calves. Characteristics NP were compared calves with without pneumonia, US. Secondary objectives compare age, clinical respiratory score (CRS), previous antibiotic therapy. Holstein heifer (n = 50) from a southern Wisconsin enrolled at either 3 or 6 wk age; 4 sampled both time points. Antibiotic treatment history also collected for 30 d before enrollment. For purpose study, defined having lobar US, least 1 lung lobe. Following examination CRS deep swab obtained 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Alpha reduced that positive, beta tended be different previously treated antibiotics positive. Microbial not pneumonia. most dominant genus identified Mycoplasma spp.; however, there no association relative abundance (RA) status. median RA spp. increased 25 (95% confidence interval, CI: 3, 40) age age. Pasteurella 1.5 0.1, 3) Additionally, 2.3 0, 9) CRS-positive CRS-negative Psychrobacter 2 12) Chryseobacterium 0.15 2) antibiotics.

Antimicrobial Resistant Escherichia coli in Faeces from Preweaned Dairy Calves

Antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria are increasing threats for human and veterinary medicine. Faecal Escherichia coli (E. coli) from preweaned dairy calves is often resistant to multiple antimicrobials and calves may therefore serve as reservoirs for these bacteria and their resistance genes. This thesis investigated the prevalence, risk factors, and spread of resistant E. coli on Swedish da...

Respiratory Pathogens in Québec Dairy Calves and Their Relationship with Clinical Status, Lung Consolidation, and Average Daily Gain

BACKGROUND Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is 1 of the 2 most important causes of morbidity and mortality in dairy calves. Surprisingly, field data are scant concerning the prevalence of respiratory pathogens involved in BRD in preweaned dairy calves, especially in small herds. OBJECTIVES To identify the main respiratory pathogens isolated from calves in Québec dairy herds with a high incide...

Comparison of Thoracic Auscultation, Clinical Score, and Ultrasonography as Indicators of Bovine Respiratory Disease in Preweaned Dairy Calves

BACKGROUND The diagnostic tools for bovine respiratory disease diagnosis include clinical inspection, thoracic auscultation, and ultrasonography. HYPOTHESIS Thoracic auscultation and clinical examination have limitations in the detection of lung consolidation in dairy calves. ANIMALS Prospective cohort of 106 preweaned calves from 13 different dairy herds (10 with a history of active bovine...

A Deep Nasopharyngeal Swab Versus Nonendoscopic Bronchoalveolar Lavage for Isolation of Bacterial Pathogens from Preweaned Calves With Respiratory Disease

BACKGROUND Nonendoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a practical alternative for a deep nasopharyngeal swab (DNS) to sample the airways of a large number of calves in a short period of time. The extent of commensal overgrowth and agreement of BAL with DNS culture results in preweaned calves are unknown. OBJECTIVES To compare commensal overgrowth and bacterial culture results between DNS a...
